unless mistaken it doesn't sees to be possible to playback midi notes from a usbmidi track without gear plugged in.

it would be nice to be able to copy midi notes from a usb midi track to a midi track for internal playback

That's already possible.

I've been using the trial and couldn't find a way to playback usb midi tracks using the internal sounds, or copying whole midi tracks to a new midi track

Although there is no feature to directly copy a USB track into a MIDI instrument track, but you can achieve that by opening a USB MIDI track in Piano Roll view, then copying all the notes you need, then pasting them into any other MIDI track after opening it in the Piano Roll view.
