sending midi to external device

I am a newbie with AEMS  and I have a question that maybe you have seen already:
is it possible to send midi data to an external tone generator like an expander and record the audio coming out?

Yes, you would for example need a USB audio interface with MIDI ports. You then create a USB MIDI track with the USB interface as output, then connect the MIDI output of the interface to the tone generator. Then you connect the audio output of the tone generator to the inputs of the USB audio interface and record it on an audio track.
